Since 2015, the EU has created an almost complete set of regulatory rules for the safe integration of drones into aviation. This has been accompanied and focused by the scope of SESAR3 JU that has widened the scope from previous SESAR JUs to include the safe and efficient integration of drones as well. Drone regulation and its implementation have come a long way, however, there remains still ground to be covered before drones will operate at large scale and economically viable.
As a new European Commission has taken office, now is the right moment to consider the priorities for European policies on the full integration of drones into aviation in parallel to the ongoing modernization of European aviation overall. The European drone stakeholders need to define the added-value and benefits from their large-scale introduction into the European economy. Discussions will also include which programmes and structures will be best suited to fulfil those goals.
The panel will discuss those goals, challenges and priorities against the ongoing early initiatives to define those priorities for this future European Commission and the next Mid-Financial Framework.
