The Use of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Urban Airspace Design and Next-Generation UTM Services

The rapid growth of drone (UAS) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) operations in urban environments is pushing airspace management systems to their limits. In this presentation, we will share ongoing projects at ENAC Airbus Sopra Steria Drones and the UTM Research Chair that focus on innovative research in dynamic airspace design and advanced UTM services. Among several topics, we will highlight our recent achievements in data-driven airspace reconfiguration—using both machine learning and bio-inspired approaches—and discuss real-time and fast-time simulation techniques integrated with advanced UTM services for stress testing the overall system.

Attendees will gain insights into the challenges of dynamic airspace design, including the feasibility of safe transition methods and rapid information exchange among airspace users. We will also showcase our findings from bio-inspired methodologies, such as ant-colony and slime-mold algorithms, to illustrate how they can inform airspace design and enable smoother transitions during dynamic modifications. Finally, we will ground our discussion with insights from our industrial partner SopraSteria, addressing social acceptability and its impact on the UAM market.
